Gist received an Associates of Art in Printmaking from Temple College, followed by his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art at the University of Texas at Austin. He has had experience as an Art Therapist with Scott & White Hospital Nursing in Temple, Texas, and as an Art Teacher at Bellaire High School, Houston ISD, in Bellaire, Texas.
In reference to his own artwork, he says,"The subjects I use most often are those that are most relevant to my life as an adult and a parent. Poverty, religion, beauty, death, and sex are themes that recur with my work because these are some issues that raise questions that I struggle with as an adult. I commonly use humor and sarcasm to approach these subjects so that they are, (at least to me) more palatable. All of my work is, in one way or another, a self portrait, or at the very least, autobiographical. Some are narratives as well.
"I enjoy working in a variety of media. Although steel and cast sculpture are my favorite media, I also enjoy painting and printmaking, specifically screen-printing. I commonly use a variety of techniques and media within the same piece, as I feel the subject or theme requires."
