A native Texan, Joan grew up and went through public schools in San Angelo. Her earliest and best memories are doing creative things such as making doll clothes and “mud” pies. After graduation from high school, she attended Baylor University where she met and married her husband, Jack. They have two daughters and one granddaughter. Joan and Jack lived in Austin for many years and it was there that she had the opportunity to study oil painting. This was the realization of a lifelong dream to study art. In Austin, she studied with Dianne Herrman for four years and feels she gained a good knowledge of color.
It wasn’t until moving to Salado that she experimented with watercolor and found what has become her medium of choice. Watercolor was a real challenge, requiring a great deal of dedication and study. Early in her watercolor career, Joan, accompanied by Jerry Goodman, spent a week studying with Tom Lynch in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. That was the real beginning of her watercolor education. After all these years of study and hours of painting, she has realized she loves to paint still life with flowers.
Joan says that one lifetime isn’t long enough to learn it all or do all the paintings she has in mind! Joan has been teaching small classes to members of Salado Village Artists for several years. Some of her awards include the John Carter Spirit of Central Texas Award, Best of Show SVA 1998, and the Barclay Blue Ribbon Winner for Still Life 2004 and Merit Award.
